Fr Carl Telford SM Part 1 of 7 Introduction ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The first thing to do, along these plain lines, is to say why I've closed the shop up and come into the back office on a night when there's still plenty of business that might be done. Words haven't figured much in my life, and though over the years I've met many of what the world counts to be the big thinkers and talkers of our times, I've stayed what most would call a plain man. ![]() But the truth is that I haven't got the quick tongue or the slick wit for that kind There's likely some polished way of starting a story like this, a clever bit of gaming that'd sucker people in surer than the best banco feeler in town. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mostly he uses anecdotes to tell how something we take for granted has shaped and shaded our perceptions ever since humans first started carving messages on hard surfaces. The basics of font design are covered here - like serif versus sans serif, for instance, or principles of kerning and line spacing - but Garfield doesn’t overwhelm readers with too many technicalities. In 22 chapters, the author examines the ever-changing, almost organic nature of the printed word. ![]() “We walk around, and the history of type beckons from every angle, here a whisper, there an alarm.…” “We live at a time where we have never had such an engaging choice of fonts from which to design an alluring storefront or sell a product,” explains Garfield, who’s looked at such topics as stamps and the color mauve in his other books. With wit and insight, he enlivens a topic that few outside the graphic trades might ponder. Flying in the face of the digital-age mantra that “print is dead,” Simon Garfield’s “Just My Type” takes an engaging look at the world of fonts, the building blocks of everything we read. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kojo, for example, is taken from his mother, Ness (descendent of Esi), as a baby, while she attempts to escape the brutality of a slave plantation. The theme of what true freedom means as an American is prominent as characters navigate their traumatic pasts and inherited fear into the present day. Throughout Homegoing Gyasi questions who is really free in America. Each chapter alternates in narration from the perspectives of descendants of Effia and Esi as the stories move through the passage of time from the 18th Century to the present day. Effia marries a British slave trader and leads a life of comfort in the Cape Coast Castle (an old British slave fort where enslaved Africans were held in an underground dungeon) while Esi is captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the same castle, and sold into slavery in America. Homegoing is composed of many linked short stories that follow the lineage of two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, born in different villages in Ghana during the 18th century. I will say, it took me longer than normal to finish this book though, because of the content on slave experience, and the fact that it spans 200 years- I took my time with it and am so glad I did. After putting this book down, I instantly thought about all of the ways I could incorporate the novel or even excerpts of it into a college classroom. I can’t fully express how much I enjoyed Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. ![]() |
